Airman confesses to attempting to hire a hitman on RentAHitman.com

An Air National Guardsman from Toledo, hoping to become a hired killer, submitted his resume on a website called www.rentahitman.com. Unbeknownst to him, the website was a joke and the company behind it was not real. The website administrator, posing as “Guido,” engaged with the guardsman and ultimately involved the FBI in early 2023. Undercover agents met with the guardsman, Josiah Ernesto Garcia, in Tennessee, where he was paid to kill a non-existent target. Garcia was ready to carry out the job and provided gruesome details. He was subsequently arrested and has pleaded guilty to using interstate commerce facilities in the commission of murder-for-hire, facing up to 10 years in prison. Garcia claimed he was motivated by the need to support his family and his military experience. The website, originally created for a cyber security startup, had transitioned to a parody site over the years due to numerous inquiries about murder-for-hire services. Despite warnings, other individuals have also fallen for such online schemes and have been caught attempting to hire hitmen. The website administrator, “Guido,” continues to expose such dangers and engage with those who make threats through the site. The guardsman’s case serves as a cautionary tale about the serious consequences of engaging in illegal activities online.
