Arlington County has recently implemented ten new speed cameras in school zones to crack down on drivers who exceed the speed limit. These cameras went live on August 26, and as of Wednesday, they have begun issuing $100 tickets to offenders. Prior to this, warnings were given out, with a total of 1,823 being issued. According to Arlington County Police Department Public Information Officer Ashley Savage, one in three fatal and critical crashes in the county involve speed, making programs like this crucial for road safety.
The cameras are only operational during school hours when the speed limit is 20 miles per hour, and drivers must be traveling over 11 miles per hour to receive a ticket. The goal of the program is to encourage drivers to adhere to speed limits and make roadways safer for everyone. Residents living near school zones with the cameras have expressed their support for the initiative, hoping that it will encourage safer driving practices.
The county will continue to evaluate the impact of the speed cameras on road safety to determine the future of the program. This evaluation will include assessing whether additional cameras will be needed in the future. Overall, the installation of these speed cameras aims to reduce speeding and ensure the safety of students and pedestrians in Arlington County.
