The Haitian Bridge Alliance, a nonprofit representing the Haitian community, has filed charges against former President Donald Trump and his running mate, JD Vance, over the chaos and threats experienced by Springfield, Ohio. The move came after inaction by the local prosecutor following false claims made by Trump during a presidential debate about Haitian immigrants in the town abducting and eating pets. The claims were also echoed by Vance, currently representing Ohio in the U.S. Senate.
Following these claims, Springfield experienced more than 30 bomb threats, leading to closures of government buildings and schools, and increased security measures. The Haitian immigrants in Springfield, who have Temporary Protected Status, have faced safety concerns and discrimination as a result of the false claims made by Trump and Vance.
The charges against Trump and Vance include disrupting public services, making false alarms, telecommunications harassment, aggravated menacing, and complicity. The Haitian Bridge Alliance’s attorney, Subodh Chandra, emphasized that no one is above the law, and if someone else had caused the chaos in Springfield, they would have been arrested.
The Trump-Vance campaign has defended the former president’s actions by highlighting the issues with the immigration system overseen by Vice President Kamala Harris. Charges brought by private citizens, such as the Haitian Bridge Alliance, are rare but permitted in Ohio. A hearing is required before the affidavit can move forward, and as of now, none have been scheduled.
