The father of two triplet babies, who were murdered by nurse Lucy Letby, has described the frantic scenes that unfolded as his children collapsed in the neonatal unit at the Countess of Chester hospital. Letby injected air into the bloodstream of one child and into the stomach of another, leading to their deaths in June 2016. The deaths were said to be the “tipping point” for consultants who suspected Letby and demanded she be removed from the unit.
Letby was sentenced to 15 whole-life orders after being convicted of murdering seven babies and attempting to murder seven others. A public inquiry led by Lady Justice Thirlwall is currently examining events at the hospital where Letby worked.
The father of the babies described the chaotic moments when he realized his children were collapsing and the medical staff appeared to be searching online for tutorials on how to perform routine medical procedures. He also expressed his belief that the hospital had knowledge of Letby’s crimes before the deaths of his children.
The father recalled interacting with Letby and her behavior following the deaths of his children. He criticized the hospital for not being transparent with him and his wife about Letby’s actions.
The inquiry continues to investigate the events surrounding Letby’s actions at the Countess of Chester hospital.
