Political Dispute Threatens DC Families’ Homes in Rapid Rehousing Program

The Washington D.C. Council is pushing Mayor Bowser’s administration to extend the Rapid Rehousing Program to prevent hundreds of families from being evicted. The program was designed to help homeless families transition into housing by providing temporary rent assistance while they work towards financial independence. However, Councilmember At-Large Robert White has criticized the administration for failing to address the issue, stating that many families cannot afford their leases even when working full-time.

White pointed out that the council had already secured funding for housing vouchers to prevent evictions, but the administration changed its plans after the budget was passed. Mayor Bowser’s administration argues that the city cannot afford to continue supporting all families in the program, leading to concerns about closures of affordable housing properties and potential homelessness for thousands of residents in the coming months.

Despite the challenges, White and the council remain committed to finding a solution to prevent families from losing their homes. “We can’t have families in our city who are relying on a program end up homeless,” White emphasized. He urged the administration to use the funds allocated by the council to extend housing vouchers and ensure that families can remain in their homes. Ultimately, the goal is to prioritize the well-being of Washington D.C. residents and prevent further homelessness in the city.
