State Lawmaker Stops Trump’s Efforts to Secure Nebraska’s Electoral Vote

Former President Donald Trump has reignited a conservative push to secure one of Nebraska’s electoral votes that could impact the presidential election outcome. However, State Senator Mike McDonnell, whose support is crucial, has stated that he will not support altering the current system that splits Nebraska’s electoral votes by congressional district. This decision quashed Republican hopes, as a bill to change the system would require 33 votes out of 49 seats in the legislature, and Republicans only hold exactly 33 seats.

McDonnell urged Governor Jim Pillen and other state lawmakers to pass a constitutional amendment during the next legislative session and allow Nebraskans to decide on the changes. Despite Nebraska being traditionally red, its 2nd district, surrounding Omaha, has voted for Democrats in the past, making it a critical factor in the presidential election.

If Vice President Harris won the Rust Belt states while Trump captured the Sun Belt states, the Nebraska vote could determine the election outcome. Senator Lindsey Graham met with Nebraska lawmakers last week to discuss the proposal, emphasizing the importance of securing that one electoral vote.

In response, Trump called McDonnell a “grandstander” and vowed to win the Omaha-based electoral vote in November. The Harris campaign did not provide a comment, leaving the situation uncertain as the election is only 43 days away. With the potential for a tied Electoral College, the House of Representatives could play a deciding role in selecting the winner, which could favor Trump.
