Israeli soldiers raided and shut down Al Jazeera’s occupied West Bank bureau in Ramallah, despite it being located in an area designated as under Palestinian control. This action by Israel is not unprecedented, as it has previously conducted operations in areas controlled by the Palestinian Authority. The closure order accuses Al Jazeera of incitement and supporting terrorism, which has resulted in the targeting of the news agency and its journalists. Al Jazeera’s bureau team was evacuated from the building, and their cameras were left behind. The team was unable to approach the building or retrieve their vehicles due to threats from Israeli soldiers. The closure order is for 45 days, but it is assumed it will be automatically renewed, similar to a previous closure order issued in Israel. The bureau head was informed that any appeals would have to go through the military command, which operates with secret evidence and indefinite detentions. The Al Jazeera team is currently unable to access the bureau, which has been sealed off by large metal plates. These actions by Israel have been criticized as attempts to suppress news coverage of Palestinian issues and violations by the Israeli state.
