The United Nations General Assembly recently adopted a resolution calling for Israel to end its illegal occupation of Palestinian territory within a year. While this was seen as a victory for Palestinian advocacy, the fact that 54 countries did not support the resolution is concerning. These nations are accused of endorsing Israel’s actions and contributing to a status quo of oppression and suffering.
The resolution was based on the findings of the International Court of Justice, which declared Israel’s occupation illegal and its settlements on Palestinian land unlawful. Despite clear international law against occupation, some countries, including the United States and the United Kingdom, have supported Israel and ignored calls for justice.
The US, for example, has a long history of arming Israel and standing against resolutions condemning its actions. This stance contrasts sharply with its response to other occupations, such as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, where the US provided extensive support to Ukraine. Similar double standards are evident in the UK and Germany’s positions on arms sales and legal proceedings against Israel.
The actions of these countries suggest a breakdown of the global legal framework and raise questions about the integrity of international law. By shielding Israel from accountability, they risk undermining justice and allowing for further human rights abuses. To restore faith in international law, countries must prioritize human rights over strategic interests and hold each other accountable for violations. Only through consistent and unbiased application of international law can the world prevent a descent into lawlessness.
