Xi Jinping from China will travel to Russia for the upcoming BRICS summit next month.

Chinese leader Xi Jinping is set to visit Russia next month for a summit of the BRICS bloc of developing economies, confirming China’s commitment to its alliance with Russia as they seek to counter the West’s global influence. This will be Xi’s second visit to Russia since the conflict in Ukraine began. China has backed Russia’s contentions that its actions were provoked by the West and continues to supply key components for Russian weapons production. Xi happily accepted an invite from Russian President Vladimir Putin to attend the BRICS summit in Kazan in October, where the two will also hold a bilateral meeting to discuss their successful relationship. Russia has become increasingly dependent on China economically as Western sanctions have limited its access to international trade. The two countries have deepened their military ties, with China importing high-tech components for Russian military industries to circumvent Western sanctions. The BRICS alliance aims to amplify the voice of major emerging economies and reform international institutions like the United Nations and the IMF. Founded in 2006, BRICS has expanded to include new members like Iran and Egypt, with Saudi Arabia considering joining and Azerbaijan and Malaysia applying for membership. The alliance is working towards a fairer world order to counterbalance Western influence.
