Travellers leaving Estonia crossing into Russia have been found to transport goods in short supply in Russia, such as spare parts for cars, machinery, components for drones, electronics, and radio transmission devices. Despite nearly 600 violations recorded since August at the Narva border crossing, the daily rate has slightly dropped to 18. Customs controls were introduced in August, limiting hours for pedestrians to cross into Russia. This change came after Russia closed the crossing to vehicles in February for construction works at the Ivangorod border crossing. Estonian authorities worry that Russia may limit crossings at other border points, complicating travel between the two countries. The Estonian Police and Border Guard advise against all travel to Russia due to tensions since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Estonia warns that the border may have to be closed at short notice for national security concerns. Concerns about deliberate illegal entries to the EU have prompted warnings that the border may be closed to protect national security. In a similar move, Finland closed its border with Russia last year, accusing Moscow of encouraging irregular migrants to cross the border. This closure was extended indefinitely in April.
