Howard University’s College of Medicine received a significant boost with the announcement of a $175 million gift from Bloomberg Philanthropies’ Greenwood Initiative. This generous donation is part of a larger effort to support historically Black medical schools in the United States. Howard University has recently been recognized as the top historical Black college or university in the nation by Forbes magazine, according to its 2024–2025 America’s Top Colleges rankings.
The annual list from Forbes highlights schools that produce successful and influential graduates from all economic backgrounds, with less student debt. Factors such as return on investment, average student debt, and graduate outcomes are considered in the rankings. In addition, freshman-to-sophomore retention rates, on-time graduation, and alumni salaries play a role in determining a school’s position on the list.
In addition to Howard University, other historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) such as Spelman College, Morehouse College, Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University, and North Carolina A&T State University also made the Forbes list. The $175 million gift from Bloomberg Philanthropies will support Howard University’s College of Medicine, public health initiatives, and the education of health professionals of color.
President of Howard University, Ben Vinson III, Ph.D., expressed his gratitude for the gift, stating that the university’s top ranking among HBCUs demonstrates its influence and commitment to intellectual discovery and global culture. The donation will further propel Howard University into the upper echelon of the nation’s research institutions as it continues to push the boundaries of knowledge to address pressing global challenges.
