Authorities in Kenosha, Wisconsin have recovered the body of a diver who went missing while exploring a Lake Michigan shipwreck. The diver, identified as 72-year-old Patrick Kelly of Winthrop Harbor, Illinois, failed to resurface while exploring the S.S. Wisconsin wreck in over 120 feet of water. Kelly’s wife, who was on their boat at the time, sent a distress call when he did not return as scheduled.
Multiple agencies, including the U.S. Coast Guard, initially responded to the incident but had to suspend their search due to poor lake conditions. They resumed their efforts the following morning and eventually located Kelly’s body using sonar and robotic vehicles. The S.S. Wisconsin sank in 1929 during a storm, resulting in the death of nine crew members. The captain was rescued from the water but later died on shore.
The recovery of Kelly’s body has brought closure to this tragic incident. The Wisconsin Shipwrecks website provides historical information about the S.S. Wisconsin and the events surrounding its sinking. The Associated Press reports that the authorities have successfully concluded their search and recovery efforts. Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of Patrick Kelly during this difficult time.
