A 16-year-old from Clarksburg, Maryland, has been arrested and charged with attempted first-degree murder following a shooting near Northwest High School. The suspect, identified as Jaiden Ochieng, allegedly chased a 15-year-old male victim off a school bus and fired a handgun at him on March 13. Fortunately, the victim was not injured. Police recovered two shell casings and a stolen handgun that Ochieng had discarded before his arrest. Ochieng now faces additional charges, including possession of a firearm on school property.
Despite being charged as an adult and held without bond, it is unclear whether Ochieng is a student at Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS). The arrest has raised concerns among the school community, with MCPS expressing great concern over the revelation that Ochieng had a firearm on school property. This incident follows a prior gun-related incident involving MCPS students in September.
As the largest school district in Maryland, MCPS currently does not have metal detectors in schools, prompting concerns among parents and the community. Parents at Northwest High School have expressed worries about recent incidents and the district’s communication protocols. The investigation into Ochieng’s case is ongoing, with MCPS being repeatedly asked for clarity on the situation. As the community waits for more information, Ochieng remains in custody, and authorities are working to ensure the safety of students and staff.
