The D.C. community is demanding justice after the release of body camera footage showing the fatal shooting of Justin Robinson, a Violence Interrupter for the city, at a McDonald’s drive-thru. On the day of the incident, police found Robinson unconscious with a gun on his lap. They claim that as he woke up, he tried to grab an officer’s gun, leading to the fatal shots being fired. Robinson’s family is calling for the “full release” of all body camera footage to reveal the entire story of what happened. Despite initial reluctance from Robinson’s next of kin to release the footage, the community has rallied for transparency in the investigation. Police have confirmed that all footage from fatal officer-involved shootings is usually made public, with certain parts redacted to protect the identities of witnesses. Nearly a thousand people have signed a petition calling for “Justice for Justin,” with the two officers involved in the shooting placed on administrative leave. The community is joining in solidarity with the Robinson family to seek accountability and a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding Justin’s death.
