Leaders of Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) discuss enhanced school security measures and the consideration of implementing metal detectors.

Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) in Maryland has announced new security measures for the 2024-2025 school year, including the possibility of introducing metal detectors. The decision comes in the wake of serious incidents in the county in recent years, including a near-fatal shooting at Magruder High School in 2022. Former county police chief Marcus Jones, now MCPS’ Security and Compliance Chief, stated that they are in the early stages of researching metal detectors and are consulting with other school districts that already use them. Budgeting and logistical considerations, such as integrating metal detectors into the school day, are being discussed.

In addition to the potential introduction of metal detectors, MCPS is also focusing on increasing security staff presence in schools to address issues like drug use and vaping. The school system now has 286 security staff members, a 10% increase over the past two years. Community Engagement Officers (CEOs), similar to School Resource Officers, are being added to high schools, with plans to have an officer at each school. These officers will have offices at high schools to be available to students and staff, though they will not be patrolling the hallways.

Acting Assistant Chief of the Montgomery County Police David McBain emphasized the importance of communication and collaboration between MCPS and law enforcement to ensure a safe school environment. The increased security measures and partnerships aim to provide a secure and supportive learning environment for students in Montgomery County.
