The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has launched an investigation into Ticketmaster’s handling of ticket sales for the Oasis band tour following complaints of price increases. Fans expressed anger after discovering that ticket prices had unexpectedly risen from £135 to £355 for standing tickets. The CMA will look into whether dynamic pricing was used and if consumers were provided with clear and timely information. Fans are urged to provide evidence of their ticket buying experience, including screenshots, to aid in the investigation.
The investigation was welcomed by Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who emphasized the importance of transparency in ticket pricing to ensure customers can make informed decisions. Ticketmaster has stated that it is committed to cooperating with the investigation and will provide more information on the ticket sale process.
The CMA’s chief executive, Sarah Cardell, emphasized the need for fans to be treated fairly when purchasing tickets, stating that the investigation will determine if consumer protection laws were breached. The authority will engage with Ticketmaster and gather evidence from various sources, including the band’s management and event organizers.
Ticketmaster, owned by US entertainment giant Live Nation, has defended its dynamic pricing model, which is aimed at preventing ticket touting by setting prices closer to market value. The CMA’s investigation aims to address concerns raised by fans and ensure transparency in ticket sales processes.
