Sammy Sadler was a country music artist whose career was cut short when his friend, Kevin Hughes, was murdered. Despite suspicions, he was able to have several songs reach the charts and even be named the No. 5 male vocalist by Cash Box magazine. His success seemed mysterious, but he denied any involvement in manipulating chart positions or nominations.
Beth Watts was a singer who was actually an investigative officer working on a sting operation to expose a fraudulent country music promoter, Robert Metzgar. Her terrible singing and the fake persona convinced Metzgar that he could make her a star. The operation also uncovered Chuck Dixon, who was implicated in a murder case involving Kevin Hughes. Dixon passed away before he could be arrested, but information from Metzgar and other previously scared individuals emerged further incriminating him. This included connections to women who had his secret children, like Audre Medlock.
The investigation into Hughes’ murder, believed to involve Dixon and Tony D, seemed to be coming together before Dixon’s death. Metzgar agreed to testify in exchange for immunity, but Dixon’s death prompted more cooperation from others. Dixon’s family expressed shock upon learning about his secret child, and the case continued to unravel slowly over the years. Despite the dramatic turns and unexpected deaths, the investigation into Hughes’ murder revealed a web of deceit and criminal activity within the country music industry that many had been unaware of.
