Olaf Scholz expresses concern following far-right party victories

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz expressed disappointment over the results of two regional elections in Thuringia and Saxony, where the far-right AfD made significant gains. The AfD, considered “right-wing extremist” by security officials, is unlikely to be able to govern but could still hold enough seats to block important decisions in both states. Scholz warned against normalizing the AfD’s presence, stating that the party is damaging Germany by weakening the economy and dividing society.

The results were a blow to Scholz’s coalition, with all three ruling parties losing votes in the elections. The SPD managed to remain above the 5% threshold needed to stay in the parliaments, but the Greens and Free Democrats fell out of the Thuringia state assembly. The populist leftist Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance, a new party founded by a former member of the East German Communist Party, performed better than the coalition partners.

The election results may lead to increased pressure for tougher immigration policies and intensify debates over support for Ukraine in Germany. With a year until the national election, the outcome has the potential to exacerbate infighting within the coalition. Scholz emphasized the need for mainstream parties to come together and form governments without the involvement of “right-wing extremists” like the AfD.
