The four Red Line stations that were closed as part of Metro’s summer construction project have reopened on schedule. The stations, including Glenmont, Wheaton, Forest Glen, and Silver Spring, were closed on May 31 for revitalization efforts. During the shutdown, crews also began construction on a new Purple Line mezzanine at the Silver Spring station, which will continue but allow riders to use the station. Other completed construction projects include replacing rail and grout pads, repairing leaks, sidewalks, and painting over 12,700 square feet of surfaces. Metro crews completed the equivalent of eight months of weekend closures and disruptions during the summer shutdown, as well as replacing automatic train control systems and maintaining elevators and escalators. New digital passenger information displays will be added to platforms and station entrances at the impacted Red Line stations later this year. Despite initial apprehension, riders made over 850,000 trips on Metro shuttle buses during the shutdown. The Maryland Transit Authority thanked customers for their patience and emphasized the progress made on connecting the Purple Line light rail with the Metrorail system.
