Forecasters are monitoring potential disturbances for hurricanes

The National Hurricane Center reported that there are currently no named storms in the Atlantic Basin, which is uncommon for this time of year. However, AccuWeather is warning that tropical activity is expected to increase as the 2024 hurricane season reaches the midway point. By September, warmer ocean temperatures often lead to more thunderstorms and storm development, making conditions ideal for tropical systems to form. Despite the lack of named storms currently, a broad area of low pressure near the upper Texas coast is producing showers and thunderstorms that could lead to heavy rains and potential flooding in Texas and Louisiana. Additionally, a tropical wave east of the Lesser Antilles may develop into a tropical depression as it moves westward, with potential impacts to the Lesser Antilles. Another tropical wave over western Africa is forecast to move offshore and could slowly develop as it moves westward or west-northwestward over the eastern tropical Atlantic Ocean. Overall, while there are currently no named storms, the potential for tropical activity to ramp up in the Atlantic Basin is increasing as the hurricane season progresses.
