Several European Union member states have put forth their candidates for the upcoming European Commission, with the deadline for nominations set for 30 August. Bulgaria has proposed former Foreign Minister Ekaterina Zaharieva and former Ecology Minister Julian Popov as their candidates, making them the only country to adhere to the request of proposing both male and female candidates. Italy has named Raffaele Fitto, a politician with a long career in politics, as their EU commissioner. Denmark has put forward Dan Jørgensen, a social democrat with previous experience in the European Parliament. However, Belgium is still facing political turmoil and has not yet elected a commissioner, despite the push for gender balance by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. So far, very few female candidates have been nominated for the role. These nominations mark the beginning of the process to fill the second team of EU commissioners under von der Leyen’s leadership. The selection of these candidates will have a significant impact on the future direction and policies of the European Commission.
