Dozens killed in Gaza by Israeli bombing ahead of WHO polio campaign

Israeli strikes in Gaza killed at least 48 people on Saturday as clashes escalated ahead of a planned polio vaccination campaign by the United Nations. The vaccination teams are aiming to reach 640,000 children in Gaza, but the success of the campaign relies on a ceasefire between Israeli forces and Hamas militants. The deputy minister of health in Gaza emphasized that only a comprehensive ceasefire can ensure enough children are reached, as the polio virus does not stop and can spread rapidly.

A baby was recently paralyzed by the type 2 polio virus in Gaza, the first such case in 25 years, prompting the urgent need for vaccination. The World Health Organization has stated that at least 90% of children need to be vaccinated twice for the campaign to succeed.

Despite the vaccination efforts, Israeli military operations continued in Gaza, resulting in further casualties. Fighters from Hamas, Islamic Jihad, and other groups clashed with Israeli forces in various areas of Gaza, causing more deaths and destruction. Israel’s assault on the enclave has displaced nearly the entire population of 2.3 million people and led to a hunger crisis.

In the West Bank, Israeli forces conducted military operations in the city of Jenin, further escalating tensions in the region. The ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine has resulted in a high number of casualties and widespread destruction, with allegations of genocide leveled against Israel. The situation remains volatile and continues to deteriorate, with efforts for peace and vaccination campaigns facing significant challenges.
