Oxfam America has released its annual report, the Best States to Work Index, ranking states in the US based on worker protections, wages, and rights to organize. Washington, D.C. ranked first, with the highest minimum wage in the country at $17.50 an hour. The report tracks policies that are lacking at the federal level and encourages lawmakers to raise standards for all workers.
Kaitlyn Henderson, the report author, highlighted the importance of state policies in filling gaps left by federal inaction. The BSWI serves as a policy cheat sheet for state lawmakers to enhance worker rights and protections. Despite D.C.’s top ranking, Henderson acknowledged that more can be done, particularly in ensuring wages cover the cost of living for families.
States with strong labor laws show positive well-being measures, correlating with reduced poverty, food insecurity, and infant mortality rates. Maryland ranked 15th, while Virginia placed 26th in the report. Oxfam emphasizes the importance of robust labor laws in improving community well-being.
Residents can use the BSWI as a tool to advocate for their rights and hold elected officials accountable. Henderson highlighted the need for ongoing efforts to improve worker conditions, even in states with high rankings. Overall, the index aims to encourage policy changes that benefit workers across the United States.
