A proposal to build golf courses in a Florida state park involving Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus has been put on hold after bipartisan pushback and protests. The proposal included two courses, one designed by Woods and one by Nicklaus. Nicklaus was planning to design the courses free of charge as a charitable effort. The plan also included new amenities at state parks, but golf courses were the most controversial aspect.
The backlash against the proposal came from Democrats, Republicans, and environmental groups, including Sens. Rick Scott and Marco Rubio. Steps were taken to dispel rumors that the plan was moving forward, and DeSantis later distanced himself from it, saying it was not ready for implementation.
The proposal was spearheaded by Folds of Honor, a non-profit organization helping veterans, which has been involved in similar efforts in the past. Another group, Tuskegee Dunes Foundation, also expressed interest in the project but later backed away due to community opposition.
DeSantis’ initial support for the proposal was met with criticism as people in Florida oppose additional development in state parks. Despite initial backlash, DeSantis later clarified that he never approved the plan. The controversy highlights the sensitive nature of development in natural areas and the need for community input in such decisions.
