The Washington State Cougars are gearing up to kick off their 2024 season under the leadership of head coach Jake Dickert as they face off against the Portland State Vikings at Gesa Field. Redshirt sophomore John Mateer will make his debut as QB1, looking to lead the Cougars to victory in their first game of the season.
Despite facing some challenges, such as missing wide receiver Carlos Hernandez due to injury, Mateer will have a strong receiving corps to rely on, including top target Kyle Williams. The Cougars will also look to revamp their ground game with running backs Leo Pulalasi and Wayshawn Parker.
On defense, redshirt senior linebacker Kyle Thornton will lead the charge with aspirations to continue the team’s success in creating turnovers, as they have tied for the second-most takeaways in the Pac-12 since 2020. Meanwhile, the Cougars hope to send a message after being left behind in conference realignment with a convincing win over Portland State in their season opener.
Historically leading the series against the Vikings at 3-1, the Cougars are prepared to build on their previous successes. Portland State, however, returns a formidable offense led by quarterback Dante Chachere and running backs Quincy Craig and Christian Grubb.
