Germany’s Chancellor Olaf Scholz recently oversaw the deportation of 28 Afghan nationals back to Afghanistan, signaling a clear stance that foreign-born criminals will not be spared from deportation. The individuals deported were all convicted criminals, although specific details about their offenses were not provided by the government. This move marks the first deportations of Afghan nationals back to their homeland since the Taliban regained power in 2021.
The deportations were organized through non-diplomatic channels, as Germany does not have official relations with the Taliban. Interior Minister Nancy Faeser emphasized that the removal of these individuals was a security issue for Germany. The decision to deport the individuals came shortly after a deadly knife attack in the town of Solingen, where three people were killed and eight others were wounded. The suspect in the Solingen attack, a Syrian citizen, was arrested on suspicion of murder and ties to a terrorist organization. The Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack.
Chancellor Scholz had previously vowed to resume deportations of criminals from Afghanistan and Syria following a separate knife attack in Frankfurt. In response to the recent events, Faeser announced plans to tighten knife laws and make deportations easier. The government’s actions reflect a commitment to maintaining security and addressing criminal activity within the country, particularly among foreign-born individuals.
