Florida to carry out death penalty for man found guilty of murdering college student in national forest in 1994

Loran Cole, a Florida man convicted of killing a college freshman and raping the student’s sister while they were camping in a national forest 30 years ago, is scheduled to be executed on Thursday at Florida State Prison. Cole is also serving two life sentences for rape. The U.S. Supreme Court denied Cole’s final appeal, and his execution is set for just after 6 p.m. Department of Corrections officials described Cole as “compliant” on the day of his execution and said he had two visitors, including his son, and enjoyed a meal of pizza and ice cream.

Cole and a friend befriended the two college students in the Ocala National Forest before robbing them, beating the brother, and killing him by slitting his throat. The sister was taken back to the campsite, tied up, and raped by Cole. She was left tied to a tree overnight and raped again the next day, but eventually managed to free herself and seek help. Cole’s death warrant was signed by Gov. Ron DeSantis, and despite arguments of brain damage, mental illness, and Parkinson’s disease, the state Supreme Court rejected the defense’s arguments.

Cole’s execution will be the first in Florida since Michael Zack was put to death last October for a separate crime. Cole and his accomplice were convicted of first-degree murder, with his accomplice receiving a life sentence. The case has brought attention to the brutality of the crime and the impact on the victims’ families, and highlights the ongoing debate surrounding the death penalty in Florida.
