Former Ward 8 D.C. Board of Education member Markus Batchelor has launched a write-in campaign to challenge Council member Trayon White in November’s election. White, who is facing a federal bribery charge, is still set to appear on the ballot as the Democratic nominee, leaving Batchelor with limited options to offer Ward 8 residents another choice.
Batchelor recently spoke with WTOP and expressed his concerns about the future of Ward 8, emphasizing the need for strong leadership to address critical issues such as education, public safety, housing, and economic development. He believes that a write-in campaign is the best way to ensure that residents have a viable alternative in the upcoming election.
While acknowledging that White is innocent until proven guilty, Batchelor pointed out that the legal process could take a significant amount of time and attention away from important community issues. He emphasized the urgency of providing Ward 8 residents with a candidate who can focus on advancing prosperity without distractions.
Batchelor also highlighted the possibility of the D.C. Democratic Party replacing White as the nominee before the September 12 deadline, offering voters a different choice on the ballot. Ultimately, Batchelor’s decision to pursue a write-in campaign stems from his commitment to representing the best interests of Ward 8 residents and ensuring that their voices are heard in the upcoming election.
