A 64-person case involving $300 million reaches a settlement.

Anthony Eugene Moulder and Abdou-Rahmane Diallo were sentenced for their involvement in a $300 million telemarketing fraud scheme targeting older and vulnerable Americans in a nationwide magazine subscription scam. Both men pleaded guilty to various charges and were sentenced to prison terms. The scheme, also known as the “magazine scam,” defrauded over 150,000 victims over two decades. The FBI and U.S. Postal Inspection Service uncovered the fraud in 2020, leading to numerous guilty pleas and convictions.

Moulder operated fraudulent magazine subscription businesses in Florida, scamming victims out of nearly $86.6 million from 2008 to 2020. Diallo co-owned a company that pretended to offer subscription cancellation services, defrauding victims of $30 million by charging them for non-existent services. The scheme intentionally targeted older and vulnerable individuals, preying on their susceptibility to deceptive sales tactics. Other individuals involved in the scheme were also charged and convicted for defrauding victims of millions of dollars through similar fraudulent schemes.

The fraudulent telemarketing tactics used by the defendants involved posing as employees of victims’ existing subscription companies, offering false promises to reduce rates or cancel subscriptions in exchange for large payments. Despite the promises made, the subscriptions were not cancelled, and victims continued to be billed for non-existent services. The Department of Justice has been actively pursuing and prosecuting individuals involved in the scam to bring them to justice and recover funds for victims.
