Zuckerberg claims White House exerted pressure on Facebook regarding certain COVID-19 content during the pandemic

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently revealed that senior Biden administration officials pressured Facebook to censor COVID-19 content during the pandemic. In a letter to Rep. Jim Jordan, Zuckerberg stated that officials, including those from the White House, repeatedly pushed Facebook to remove certain COVID-19 content, including humor and satire. He expressed regret for not being more outspoken against this pressure and vowed to push back on such demands in the future.

The White House responded by stating that they encourage responsible actions to protect public health and safety during the pandemic. Experts have warned about the spread of misinformation on social media during the upcoming U.S. election, with the use of artificial intelligence and other tools to create false news stories and mislead voters.

Zuckerberg also mentioned that Facebook started labeling posts about COVID-19 vaccines with credible information in early 2021 and warned users who shared misinformation about the virus in April 2020. He has been trying to change the perception of Facebook among conservatives and recently stated that he would no longer donate money to widen election access through the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative.

Despite donating $400 million to help local election offices prepare for the 2020 presidential election, Zuckerberg stated that he wants to remain neutral and not appear to be favoring one party over the other. He emphasized his goal of remaining impartial in political matters. The letter from Zuckerberg to the House Judiciary Committee was seen as a step to address concerns about censorship and political bias on Facebook.
