Our Claim: The Island Fishing Community at the Forefront of South China Sea Tensions

Thitu Island, also known as Pag-asa Island, may seem like a tranquil paradise with its sandy beaches and blue waters, but it is at the center of a fierce maritime dispute between the Philippines and China. Occupied by the Philippines since 1974, the island is also claimed by China, leading to escalating tensions in the region.

The 387 civilians who call Thitu home are on the frontline of this struggle, facing growing surveillance by Chinese vessels, aircraft, and drones. Recent clashes near Sabina Shoal and Second Thomas Shoal have heightened concerns. China has imposed a blockade to stop Philippine resupply missions, while introducing new regulations empowering its coastguard to detain foreigners accused of trespassing.

Despite the challenges, the residents of Thitu remain steadfast in their commitment to the island. Larry Hugo, head of the fisherfolk association, vows they will not leave, even in the face of growing Chinese presence and threats. While life on the island is simple, with limited resources and amenities, residents like 14-year-old Abegail Hugo find joy in the community and natural beauty of the island.

China’s military constructions on nearby artificial islands demonstrate its ambitions in the South China Sea. However, it is the presence of civilians on Thitu that underscores the Philippines’ claim to the island. Residents like Rolly Dela Cruz and teacher Realyn Limbo stand firm in their determination to stay and defend their home.

As tensions continue to rise, residents of Thitu remain resilient and ready to face whatever challenges come their way. Despite the uncertainties, the people of Thitu Island are unwavering in their commitment to their home and their desire to live peacefully on their isolated paradise amidst a sea of unrest.
