Muhyiddin, Former Malaysian Prime Minister, Faces Sedition Charges for Monarchy Remarks | Latest Court Updates

Former Malaysian Prime Minister turned opposition leader Muhyiddin Yassin has been charged with sedition for allegedly insulting the country’s previous king during an election campaign rally earlier this month. Muhyiddin pleaded not guilty to the charges during a court appearance in Gua Musang. If found guilty, he could face up to three years in prison.

The incident in question took place on August 14, when Muhyiddin questioned why the then-King Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah did not invite him to be prime minister following the 2022 elections. The king ultimately asked Anwar Ibrahim to lead the government. Malaysia’s rotational monarchy system sees the sultans from each of the nine states taking turns serving as king.

The monarchy holds great significance among the ethnic Malay population, who make up more than half of Malaysia’s inhabitants. Sultan Abdullah has not publicly commented on the case, but his son criticized Muhyiddin’s remarks, warning that they could harm unity and erode faith in the royal institution. Muhyiddin maintains that his comments were factual and not meant to insult the monarchy.

The situation has highlighted the evolving role of the monarchy in Malaysian politics since the ruling coalition’s defeat in 2018. Sultan Abdullah was succeeded by Sultan Ibrahim in January. The trial will continue as the country closely watches the outcome of this highly-publicized case.
