Tech entrepreneur Pavel Durov, known as the “Russian Zuckerberg,” has been making headlines recently after being arrested at an airport near Paris over allegations related to his messaging app Telegram. The 39-year-old founder of popular social networks and cryptocurrency has had run-ins with authorities in Russia and around the world.
Durov became famous for creating VKontakte (VK), a social media platform more popular than Facebook in Russia. He later launched Telegram with his brother, prioritizing user data protection and refusing to moderate messages. The platform has been used by opposition groups, including during Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
After leaving Russia, Durov obtained citizenship in Saint Kitts and Nevis and later in France, where he lives in Dubai. He has an estimated net worth of $15.5 billion and is known for his mysterious and solitary lifestyle.
French investigators issued a warrant for Durov’s arrest over allegations of cyberbullying, fraud, drug trafficking, organized crime, and promotion of terrorism on his platform. He is accused of failing to prevent criminal use of Telegram.
While Durov claims Telegram responds to requests to remove harmful content and abides by EU laws, Russian authorities criticize France for their handling of the situation. It remains to be seen whether Durov will be released or charged following his extended detention period.
The tech tycoon’s arrest has sparked international attention, highlighting the complex relationship between social media platforms and illegal activities online.
