Ohio Sen. JD Vance, a former running mate of Donald Trump, avoided questions about the potential family separations that could occur as a result of Trump’s proposed “zero tolerance” policy on immigration during an interview on NBC News’ “Meet the Press.” Vance emphasized the need to address illegal immigration before considering mass deportations.
He criticized Vice President Kamala Harris for her immigration policies and suggested that addressing violent criminals should be the focus of federal resources. Vance’s comments come after Biden rescinded the zero-tolerance policy and established a family reunification task force to address the more than 5,000 families separated under the Trump administration.
The Biden administration recently collaborated with senators on a bipartisan immigration and border security plan, but GOP support for the bill decreased after Trump expressed disapproval. Trump visited the U.S.-Mexico border in Arizona for a campaign event, where he also avoided questions about potential family separations under his proposed policy.
While Trump mentioned “provisions” being made for mixed-status families, he did not provide specifics. Vance’s reluctance to address the issue of family separations is reflective of the ongoing debate surrounding immigration policies and border security in the United States.
