Following child sex abuse allegations against former senior pastor Robert Morris, prominent members of Gateway Church in Texas continue to resign or step down. Morris resigned in June after allegations from a woman named Cindy Clemishire, who accused him of molesting her when she was 12 and he was 21. Morris admitted to inappropriate behavior with her, leading to his resignation. His son James and daughter-in-law Bridget also stepped down as pastors of the church. Additionally, executive pastor Kemtal Glasgow resigned due to a moral issue that disqualifies him from serving.
Clemishire shared her story publicly, alleging that Morris abused her from 1982 to 1987 in Texas and Oklahoma. Although Morris admitted to the behavior, he downplayed it as kissing and petting rather than abuse. The church’s board of elders expressed regret over not having this information earlier and issued a statement of sympathy to the victim. In response to the allegations and resignations, the church emphasized its commitment to integrity and caring for those affected.
James Morris, set to succeed his father as pastor, took a temporary leave of absence while investigations are conducted. The church stressed that he had no knowledge of the situation. Glasgow’s departure was also announced, citing a moral failure that required him to step down from his pastor position. The church aims to support him and his family during this time.
These events have caused upheaval within Gateway Church and raised questions about leadership accountability and transparency. The church continues to navigate the aftermath of the allegations and resignations while striving to address any issues and provide support to those affected.
