Baldwin recently fired Jennifer Nelson, formerly a senior Amazon executive and COO of his tech startup, Finch AI, after she raised concerns about the mistreatment of women within the company. This incident echoed Baldwin’s previous clashes with co-owner Michelle Kang in 2021, which resulted in him relinquishing control of the franchise amidst accusations of fostering a toxic culture.
Baldwin’s management style at Finch AI has been likened to the toxic environment at Washington Spirit, where several players left the team due to verbal and emotional abuse from the former head coach, Richie Burke. The power struggle between Baldwin and Kang ultimately led to his sale of controlling stakes to Kang in February 2022, with support from players and the NWSL board.
The issue of discrimination against women in both the tech industry and sports remains a prevalent concern, with statistics showing instances of mistreatment and abuse. Several Spirit players are calling for the NWSL to reopen its investigation into Baldwin’s behavior, expressing frustration over the lack of accountability for alleged abuses in the past.
