A woman in California mailed herself a package with an Apple AirTag inside after items were stolen from her post office box. When the package was stolen again, she contacted the police, leading to the arrest of two suspects, Virginia Franchessca Lara and Donald Ashton Terry. The suspects were found with the stolen mail, as well as items believed to be stolen from over a dozen other victims. Lara was booked for possession of checks with intent to commit fraud, fictitious checks, identity theft, credit card theft, and conspiracy, while Terry was booked for burglary, possession of checks with intent to commit fraud, credit card theft, identity theft, and conspiracy, as well as several theft-related charges from Riverside County. The victim’s proactive solution and cooperation with law enforcement were commended by the Sheriff’s Office. Deputies are continuing to investigate the case and reach out to additional victims. The Apple AirTag, which helped in tracking down the suspects, is a small tracking device that can be used to locate personal items like car keys, and costs $29.
