Former Alabama offensive lineman J.C. Hassenauer has returned to the NFL with the Washington Commanders. The Commanders announced his signing on Tuesday, while waiving injured offensive tackle Alex Akingbulu. Hassenauer, who has played center and guard during his NFL career, joins Washington as they make changes to their offensive line this offseason.
Washington’s first preseason depth chart has Tyler Biadasz as the starting center, backed up by Michael Deiter. Sam Cosmi returns at right guard with Nick Allegretti at left guard. Hassenauer previously played under Washington’s offensive line coach Bobby Johnson when he was with the New York Giants.
Hassenauer had been a free agent since March 13, missing the entire 2023 season due to a triceps injury. He started three games during his time at Alabama, including the 2017 CFP national championship game against Georgia. Hassenauer joined the NFL as an undrafted rookie with the Atlanta Falcons in 2018, and has since had stints with the Pittsburgh Steelers and New York Giants.
Hassenauer is set to kick off the preseason with the Commanders on Saturday against the New York Jets. His return to the NFL comes after a tumultuous journey through various teams and a season-ending injury. As he joins Washington’s offensive line, fans will be eager to see him back in action on the field.
