Vice President Kamala Harris has secured the Democratic nomination, and voters are eager to see if Republican nominee Donald Trump will debate her on key issues like healthcare. Health policy research organization KFF conducts a comparison of the two presidential candidates, with this year’s being especially challenging due to Trump’s vague policy proposals. Trump’s Agenda47 platform focuses on drug prices, supply and addiction, and protecting Medicare, but lacks a comprehensive healthcare plan. Trump has criticized Obamacare, but his official platform does not mention repealing it entirely. Instead, he vows to lower drug prices, fix shortages, end addiction, and protect Medicaid. Harris has an advantage on healthcare, according to KFF President Drew Altman, while Trump’s promise not to cut Medicare funding is seen as “squishy.” Trump’s tax reductions have depleted the Medicare Part A Trust Fund, and he eliminated a board aimed at slowing Medicare spending. Altman noted that changes to Medicare might still be possible, as some Republicans advocate for altering its structure. The 2024 election campaign has seen little focus on healthcare, despite its importance to American voters. Democrats have used Obamacare as a rallying point, while Trump’s messaging on healthcare has waned in recent months. Altman suggested that Harris’ advantage on healthcare could be a key factor in the election, as she can build on the Biden-Harris health care record and focus on issues like abortion and overall health policy.
