Iconic American director David Lynch has revealed that he can no longer direct on set due to a diagnosis of emphysema, which has left him homebound. Lynch, known for cult classics such as Twin Peaks and Mulholland Drive, shared his diagnosis in a recent interview, citing his lifelong smoking habit as a contributing factor. Despite this setback, Lynch assured fans that he will “never retire” and may consider directing remotely in the future.
Emphysema is a serious condition primarily caused by smoking and exposure to certain chemicals at work. Lynch’s health news came as a shock to many of his dedicated followers, who appreciate his unique and surreal filmmaking style. In a follow-up statement, Lynch clarified that he has quit smoking for over two years and remains in excellent health apart from the emphysema.
While Lynch’s health struggles have limited his ability to work on set, he has not let it dampen his creativity. During the pandemic, he launched a video series and daily weather reports on YouTube, as well as releasing a new album with collaborator Chrystabell. Lynch’s last screen project was the acclaimed Twin Peaks: The Return in 2017, named the Best Film of the Decade by Cahiers du CinĂ©ma.
Despite his health challenges, Lynch continues to work on various projects, including a feature film, a Netflix series, and an animation film. Fans and colleagues alike have expressed support for Lynch as he navigates his health issues while continuing to contribute to the world of film and entertainment.
