Immigration lawyers have been warned to be cautious or even stay away from work due to threats from far-right groups targeting their firms. The Law Society and Immigration Law Practitioners’ Association cautioned their members about a list of up to 60 immigration advice centres being circulated on Telegram for possible protests. Several lawyers believe political rhetoric from Conservative politicians in the past has fuelled this threat.
This comes after a week of violent disorder in England and Northern Ireland, prompting the deployment of 2,200 riot-trained officers. Some violence targeted mosques, asylum seeker housing, and shops. The focus has now shifted to immigration law and advice centres, causing concern for the safety of residents and a warning from the Community Security Trust about potential attacks on the Jewish community.
Lawyers have expressed fear and anxiety over the threat, with calls for the government to take urgent action to address the violence. The rise in riot officers deployed demonstrates the seriousness of the situation, with 400 people arrested and 100 charged for their involvement in the disorder. The need to address the toxic narrative around immigration and protect the legal profession has become a priority for many in the face of escalating threats and attacks.
