Washington- Canadian tennis player Denis Shapovalov will keep his ranking points and prize money after successfully appealing his disqualification from the quarterfinals of the Mubadala Citi DC Open, the ATP announced. During a match against American Ben Shelton, Shapovalov lost the first set and was trailing in the second set when he threw his racket to the court and got into a heated exchange with a fan in the stands. The 25-year-old received an unsportsmanlike conduct code violation from the umpire, leading to his disqualification.
The ATP determined that the automatic loss of ranking points and prize money for a player defaulting was an overly harsh penalty for Shapovalov’s actions. However, he will still have to pay a $36,400 fine for the violation. Despite this incident, Shapovalov is set to return to action at the National Bank Open in Montreal this week, where he will face a qualifier in his first match on Wednesday.
The incident involving Shapovalov has attracted attention due to the intense emotions displayed on the court. This decision by the ATP to allow Shapovalov to retain his ranking points and prize money after his appeal will likely spark discussions within the tennis community about the consequences of player behavior during matches. Fans will be eager to see how Shapovalov performs in his upcoming matches following this incident.
