Abbas suggests Ismail Haniyeh’s assassination was intended to extend Israel’s conflict with Gaza, according to Israel-Palestine conflict News

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has condemned the killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran by Israel, calling it a cowardly act that will prolong the conflict in Gaza and have a negative impact on truce talks. Abbas plans to discuss the situation with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow, where he will be from August 12 to 14. He will also visit Turkey from August 14 to 15.

Haniyeh’s assassination has raised concerns of revenge and the potential for the conflict in Gaza to escalate into a wider Middle East war. Iran, a supporter of Hamas, has blamed Israel for the killing and vowed harsh punishment in retaliation. Russia has condemned the killing and urged all parties to refrain from further destabilizing the region, advocating for an independent Palestinian state within 1967 borders.

In separate talks in Tehran, Russian security council secretary Sergei Shoigu and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian discussed expanding ties between the two countries. Pezeshkian praised Russia’s support for Iran during difficult times and highlighted their shared goal of promoting a multipolar world for global security and peace.

Meanwhile, in Washington, DC, the US Department of State expressed skepticism about Russia playing a productive role in easing Middle East tensions. The US is urging countries to discourage Iran from escalating conflict in the region. Diplomatic pressure is mounting to prevent further escalation between Iran and Israel.
