Washington High School had an impressive 2023-2024 academic year in sports, with standout performances from various athletes. One of the top 10 sports stories from the year was Leighton Salazar, a talented softball player who made headlines by breaking another school record. Salazar set a new single-season program best with 36 stolen bases, surpassing a record set back in 2008. This achievement adds to the three other single-season school records she already held for hits, batting average, and runs scored as a freshman.
In addition to her record-breaking performance, Salazar received recognition for her skills on the field. She earned her second consecutive all-state selection in Class 3A from the Iowa Girls Coaches Association, receiving second team honors and a first-team All-Southeast Conference nod. Salazar was also named an all-district selection after leading the Demons with a .524 batting average and scoring a team-high 54 runs.
The sophomore’s impressive stats helped Washington High School to achieve a second straight season with 24 wins in softball.
