Central Washington football has been predicted to have a strong season by the Lone Star Conference media voters. The Wildcats received 20 out of 30 first-place votes in the preseason poll and were named favorites. The team also swept the top two individual awards, with Tanner Volk being named LSC preseason defensive player of the year and Tyler Flanagan named LSC preseason offensive player of the year.
Volk, a Consensus All-American safety, led all NCAA divisions in interceptions last season with 13. Flanagan, a junior running back, had the league’s best rushing yards and total touchdowns. Central Washington won seven of eight conference games last season, losing only to the conference champion UT Permian Basin.
Volk won national awards for his performance last season, including the Cliff Harris Award for small college defensive player of the year. Flanagan, who returned from a serious knee injury, had an impressive season with an average of 5.8 yards per carry.
The team’s sophomore quarterback Kennedy McGill, along with top receiver Darius Morrison and Marcus Cook, are set to return for the upcoming season. Key defensive players such as Brett McCalla, Isaac Clark, Dominic Wieburg, and Josiah Cochran are also expected to be back.
The Wildcats will kick off their season on September 7th in San Diego. With high expectations set by the preseason poll and returning talent, Central Washington football fans are eagerly anticipating a successful season ahead.
