Dozens killed as Israeli airstrikes hit school in central Gaza in ongoing conflict
Israeli airstrikes hit a school in central Gaza being used as shelter by displaced people, killing at least 30 individuals. The strike was targeted at a Hamas command and control center, according to Israel’s military. In addition to the school strike, at least 12 people were killed in other attacks in Gaza on the same day.
The airstrikes come as negotiators from the US, Egypt, Qatar, and Israel prepared to meet in Italy to discuss ceasefire negotiations. CIA Director Bill Burns is expected to meet with key officials from Qatar, Israel, and Egypt to address the ongoing hostage situation and seek a ceasefire.
Prior to the strikes, Israel’s military ordered the evacuation of a designated humanitarian zone in Gaza, including parts of the city of Khan Younis. This forced displacement has been criticized by the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA, as it leaves individuals with little time to move and find safety.
The conflict began with an attack by Hamas militants on southern Israel, resulting in significant casualties and the taking of hostages. Despite international efforts to negotiate a ceasefire, the violence continues to escalate in Gaza, leaving civilians caught in the crossfire.
