In a game against the Washington Nationals, Dylan Cease of the San Diego Padres has thrown eight hitless innings, allowing only three baserunners. Cease has thrown 103 pitches, facing one batter over the minimum, and has recorded two complete games in his career, both shutouts.
The closest Washington came to getting a hit was in the fifth inning when a fly ball popped out of second baseman Xander Bogaerts’ glove, which was then caught by center fielder Jackson Merrill. Despite a bobble by Bogaerts in the eighth inning, Cease managed to throw out the baserunner at first.
Cease’s season high pitch count is 113 over seven innings, and the Padres hold a 3-0 lead on Ha-Seong Kim’s three-run single in the first inning. The only no-hitter of the season so far was thrown by Houston’s Ronel Blanco against Toronto on April 1, with Joe Musgrove being the only Padres pitcher to throw a no-hitter on April 9, 2021.
Cease’s impressive performance has kept the Nationals off the scoreboard, showcasing his talent and control on the mound. As the Padres aim to secure the win, fans and baseball enthusiasts are eagerly watching Cease as he vies for his first career no-hitter.
