President Joe Biden, in an 11-minute Oval Office address, defended his record and announced he wouldn’t seek another term. Despite his hopes for a second term, voters seemed to disagree. Acknowledging concerns about his age, Biden stated he would “pass the torch to a new generation” and focus on his remaining time in office. Despite ambitions to tackle gun violence, Supreme Court reform, cancer, NATO, and the Gaza war, achieving these goals with a Republican-controlled House is difficult.
Amid Biden’s decision not to run again, attention has shifted to the battle between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump. Harris, endorsed by Biden, is seen as the successor to protect his legacy. However, a Trump victory in the next election would threaten Biden’s achievements.
Biden’s speech marked only the fourth time he addressed the nation from the Oval Office. Historically, lame-duck presidents face challenges in achieving substantial goals, exemplified by past leaders like Johnson, Truman, and Clinton. Even the phrase “lame duck” implies helplessness in achieving significant tasks. Biden’s ambitions in his final months mirror those of previous presidents but history shows that achieving these goals can be challenging.
Although Biden remains committed to his goals in the remaining six months of his term, the task of passing legislative reforms with limited power and a focus on foreign policy is daunting. Time will tell whether his legacy will endure under the leadership of Vice President Harris or if a Trump presidency would dismantle his achievements.
