Protests and road closures follow Netanyahu’s speech at the Capitol – NBC4 Washington

Pro-Palestine Demonstrators March in D.C. During Netanyahu Address to Congress
In a fiery speech to Congress, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sought support for his country’s war in Gaza, sparking protests in D.C. Among the protesters were individuals advocating for an end to the conflict, calling for the arrest of Netanyahu, and criticizing U.S. aid to Israel. Demonstrators clashed with police, leading to arrests and the use of pepper spray.

Protesters also removed American flags and hoisted Palestinian flags outside Union Station, chanting slogans against Netanyahu and accusing him of genocide. The demonstrations represented a diverse group of people, including those from Palestinian and Jewish communities.

Netanyahu, who praised U.S.-Israeli unity, aimed to bolster support for Israel’s fight against Hamas and Iran-backed armed groups. The U.S. Capitol Police reported arrests of about 200 people in the previous day’s protests and increased security around the Capitol.

As tensions escalate, demands for a cease-fire and the release of hostages intensify. Biden and Netanyahu are expected to meet, and Vice President Kamala Harris will also hold discussions with the Israeli leader. Road closures and heightened security measures are in place during Netanyahu’s visit, highlighting the significant impact of the protests and the war’s repercussions worldwide.
