Josiah Gray of the Nationals has Tommy John surgery

Washington Nationals right-hander Josiah Gray underwent Tommy John surgery with an internal brace procedure and is expected to miss the rest of this season and likely most of the next. The surgery was performed by orthopedic surgeon Keith Meister to repair a partial tear of Gray’s ulnar collateral ligament. Manager Dave Martinez said Gray was in good spirits before the surgery and knows he has a long road to recovery ahead.

Gray, who arrived in Washington in a trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers three years ago, had shown significant improvement this season before his injury. He made just two starts with a 14.04 ERA before landing on the injured list in April. Initially believed to have a strained right flexor muscle, Gray went through a lengthy rehabilitation process that eventually led to the decision for Tommy John surgery.

Despite the setback, Martinez expressed optimism that Gray will work hard to get back on the field and be a big part of the team in the future. Gray is expected to remain with the team during his rehab process. The last Nationals starter to have Tommy John surgery was Cade Cavalli in March 2023, who has yet to return to the majors. Martinez is hopeful that Gray will recover fully and make a significant impact on the team in the upcoming season.
